The Major System for Numbers 00–99 — Floor plan

01Why it works

The Major system converts digits into consonant sounds and lets you fill in vowels freely, so each two-digit number becomes a word you can picture. The design is clever because it works around a hard constraint: consonant sounds map cleanly onto the ten digits, while vowels do not map onto anything, so they become free padding. That gives roughly a hundred distinct, pronounceable words instead of a hundred arbitrary symbols, and pronounceable is what makes them stick.

02The five moves

  1. 1

    Learn the digit-to-sound table until it is automatic in both directions.

    Looks like0 = s/z, 1 = t/d, 2 = n, 3 = m, 4 = r, 5 = l, 6 = sh/ch/j, 7 = k/g, 8 = f/v, 9 = p/b. Note that only sounds count — the letters are irrelevant.

  2. 2

    Build your own 00–99 word list, one word per number, using only the table.

    Looks like32 is m + n, so "moon" (vowel added freely). 74 is k + r, so "car". 09 is s + p, so "soap".

  3. 3

    Draw or photograph each word once. A word you have never pictured will not appear under pressure.

    Looks likeFor 12 (t + n) do not settle for "tin" in the abstract — fix the particular dented tin on your grandmother's shelf.

  4. 4

    Reuse words for long numbers by chaining two-digit pairs, not by inventing new words.

    Looks like32 74 09 becomes moon, car, soap — three images in one scene, not nine separate digits.

  5. 5

    Test the list in random order every few days until every word arrives in under two seconds.

    Looks likeFlashcards numbered 00–99, shuffled. At 90 percent instant recall the list is usable; below that it will fail silently when you need it.

03Worked example

A sixteen-digit bank reference encoded as eight word images.
Image in the headAnchor point
41 = r + t = "rat" — a rat sitting on the counter.digits 1–2
92 = p + n = "pen" — the rat is holding a pen in its teeth.digits 3–4
07 = s + k = "sock" — a sock is wrapped around the pen.digits 5–6
63 = sh + m = "sham" (a pillow sham) — the sock is stuffed inside a pillowcase.digits 7–8
38 = m + f = "movie" — the pillowcase is being projected on a cinema screen.digits 9–10
55 = l + l = "lily" — a lily is growing out of the projector.digits 11–12
21 = n + t = "net" — a fishing net is draped over the cinema seats.digits 13–14
90 = p + s = "bus" — a bus has driven through the cinema wall.digits 15–16

04Where it breaks

  • Encoding letters rather than sounds. "Phone" starts with a p in writing but an f in speech, so it encodes 8, not 9.
  • Using abstract words. "Justice" is not a picture; swap it for a gavel or a set of scales.
  • Building the list in one sitting. Ninety-nine words invented in an hour will be half-forgotten by the following week; build twenty a day for five days.
  • Borrowing someone else's published list wholesale. Their associations are not yours, and the mismatched entries are exactly the ones that fail.

05Practice drill

00:00

20 min

Build numbers 00 to 19 today — one concrete, pictured word each — and write them on cards. Shuffle and drill until you can answer a random number in under two seconds. Add twenty more words the next day, always re-drilling the full set. In five days you will have the complete board; the daily redrill is what keeps the earlier entries alive.

Run the drill with the clock on. Stop when the instructions say to.

06Questions

Does the English table work for Chinese?

Not directly, because Mandarin has no voiced and voiceless consonant pairs in the same places. Build a Chinese table on initials and finals instead — 0 can be l/ling, 1 y, 2 er, 3 san, 4 si, 5 wu — or keep the Major table and encode in English. Mixing the two produces collisions.

Why stop at 99 rather than 999?

Because a three-digit list is a thousand pictures and takes months, while a two-digit board covers ninety percent of daily use and can be built in a week. Extend to 999 only if you compete in memory sports.

Can I combine the Major system with a memory palace?

That is the standard pairing. The Major system supplies the images, the palace supplies the order, and cards supply the timing. Numbers alone rarely need a palace; long sequences almost always do.
